James began his musical education as a Chorister at Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King, where he was directed by Philip Duffy and later Mervyn Cousins. On leaving the Cathedral choir James continued his studies at the choir school (St. Edward's College) before going on to read music at the University of Liverpool and Liverpool Hope University. In 2005 he was appointed organ scholar at the Metropolitan Cathedral and studied under Richard Lea and Terence Duffy. In 2007 James was asked to give the closing recital in the Cathedral’s summer series. He is now Organist and Director of Music at St. Mary the Virgin, Walton. James was appointed Musical Director of the Crosby Capriol Singers in September 2009
